Angels Among Us….

I really wasn’t sure how to begin again On The Road….  The last couple weeks I have been trying, but I really wondered if my desire to have our signs on my car, the fun of walking into places unexpectedly or the love of searching for another great story of one of our own people right here in town would ever fully come back to me….. if you’ve read my stories you know how much I believe in Visit Londonderry and what Kathy Wagner and Steve Young, have created for our town.  You might think this is corny but my dream for Visit Londonderry is that everyone… students, individuals, businesses, groups all become united through our Londonderry CVC.  I want everyone to join, to connect together, to share in the happiness of our community but also to bring us all together when we need each other the most.   I dream of scholarships for our students, helping each other, courses like CPR, healthy but still fun eating, coming together through our Londonderry Commerce and Visitors Center.…. but finding my way back has been hard…. And then this morning ….more Angels Among Us…..

I started taking my notes for this week, Monday morning.  I really wondered if On The Road With Sherry should just end now, I checked my e-mail with half a heart and there was this wonderful up lifting e-mail from a man I have never met.  His name is Dave, and he is the owner of many of the Subways in our Area.  Subway is one of my daughter Mackensie’s favorite places to stop in when you need something delicious, healthy, and quick.  Between games or events, it’s perfect too.   I never mind stopping there, because the prices are great, the food is fresh, nutritious and delicious.  We either share a large sub or I can have a garden fresh salad with any meat choice I want on it.  I love that they have fountain drinks that I can get myself.  That’s one of my favorite vices in life, weird ug?  I know some of you are thinking “that’s nutritious”, but remove the soda and it really is.  We all need some of all the nutrients, Carbs from the bread, protein from the meat and cheeses and of course our veggies too.  Subway is great too when you have a car load of kids, you get to feel like the hero and you can afford it, too!

Anyway, back to my first Angel of the Week Among Us, Dave.   If any of you have ever tried to knock on doors, send e-mails, make phone calls about something you believe in full heartedly, knowing many people will probably avoid you, it is very hard.  Tough on the heart and tough on the ego a little too.  This is what I love to do almost every day for Visit Londonderry.  Well on one of my drop in visits, over a month ago, I went into our first local Subway in what I still call the Ben Franklin plaza.   Two great people were working there, and when I asked who I should leave information for, they said just write to this e-mail.  The people that Dave hires are always the finest and most personable around.  Happy to take care of you and help.  They were just so sweet that I thought, hey that’s great, I doubt I’ll hear anything back…. but I was completely wrong.

I took one of my Sherry chances contacting someone completely cold.  To top it off, someone that honestly doesn’t’ need Visit Londonderry, but we would just be so honored to have them as a member. I went home sent an e-mail and within a day Dave e-mailed me back.  You know what I’m going to type next How Great Is That?  He said that he wanted to learn more about Visit Londonderry and that after this busy time passed we would get together.  Dave and I have kept in touch with an e-mail here or there.  Strange how when you haven’t met someone it’s almost easier to share difficult things that are going on.  Dave, just being a good person, an Angel Among Us, took the time to not just send business e-mails to me, but to add kind words of concern and encouragement.  His words meant more than he probably realizes.  He made a difference in my life, my day.  I guess we all have to remember, think about, how our biggest or smallest actions or words can effect someone else’s lives or day.   I wonder if we really stop to think about things like this enough.  I know Dave does….

Another Angel Among Us from our town, is Patti who owns the Walls To Windows store that has been there for us many years.  Walls to Windows is located in the Crossroad’s plaza.  Patti helped me pick out drapes I could afford, as a young teacher buying my first condo in North Londonderry. When John and I moved back to Londonderry many years ago, it was Patti who helped me find the right drapes, laces, and valances for our first new home.   Patti promised that they would probably never go out of style and she was right.

Before I even decided who to write about this week, I was looking around our house, that is much more tattered, then it use to be.  14 years passed like a blink.  Carpets need to be replaced, furniture is worn with love and use, coffee tables are chipped here and there, but if you look at my window treatments they still look brand new.  Honestly I hardly ever wash them, and I know that’s a little embarrassing, but they look lovely.  Patti, gave me the right advice and I want to thank her.  I know there are lots of other places to pick from now, JC Penny, this place or that place, but Walls to Windows  is right here and devoted to our community.  Stop in, you won’t be disappointed.  I stop in now and then just to see what’s new and to say Hi.  Price and selection will pleasantly surprise you.  I wish I could take a picture of my bathroom valances, hey maybe I will to show you.  Patti can order just about anything and if something needs repair she handles it much quicker then any place I’ve ever seen.  Beautiful and painless.  It’s just so homey, warm and inviting in there, too.  Tell her Sherry said Hi, if you think of it.

Ok my last Angels among us for this week….  All the good people that are right here in our town. Waking up to more snow and no power with John away was one of those “ok where do I begin mornings”.  If know me, I’m not the best with starting generators, snow plows and shovels.  Remember what happened the last time I tried to be helpful with a shovel!  At 6:30 am I decided I had better come up with a plan of attack.  Well before I could get my jacket and snow boots on three of our neighbors were on their way to help.   Alex was walking down the road to our house, Pete was coming across from the side through the snow and Bob was on his deck saying they would be right over to give us a hand.  That’s what life is all about helping each other to find our way, lending a hand and making time.  What a beautiful way for my Road to End this week…  Thanks to all of you for sharing my Road this week, and also for clearing it too<3

With A Grateful Heart Sherry

Ps…. Next week I have an entirely different area of Londonderry to share with you…. Did you know we have a company in town called Travel and Transport, I can’t wait to tell you all about them next week, and you’ll be surprised to learn where they are located too!  I got lost going to meet them which they thought was pretty fun given I’ve lived here since 1969 and I was coming to tell them all about Visit LondonderryJ
